Our third and fourth grade scholars laced up their sneakers, took their positions, and fixed their eyes on the track in front of them. A loud “POP!” filled the air. Without a moment’s hestiation, they were off and running!
Crowds cheered them on from the packed rafters. Staff members clapped as they rounded the bend. When they came to the finish line, the runners were awarded for their heart and athleticism — gold, silver, and bronze medals placed over their heads.
This scene at the New Balance Track and Field Center marked the beginning of HCZ Summer Games, Harlem Children’s Zone’s signature track and field event.
