Kwame Owusu-Kesse and Geoffrey Canada Host World Premiere Screening of ‘Harlem Rising’ at SXSWEDU

Harlem Children’s Zone CEO Kwame-Owusu Kesse and Founder and President Geoffrey Canada host the world premiere screening of “Harlem Rising”, a documentary about the history of HCZ, at SXSWEDU in Austin, Texas in April 2024.

We are excited for Mr. Owusu-Kesse and Mr. Canada to join SXSWEDU, an annual conference that “brings together the brightest minds in education to share ideas, network, and create the future of teaching and learning,” according to the conference website.

In this talk, Mr. Canada traces the evolution of the place-based, cradle-to-career model and shares how practices developed at HCZ and beyond are leading to scalable solutions and systems change impacting over 1 million young people. 

“Harlem Rising” Screening & Q&A

Mr. Owusu-Kesse and Mr. Canada host a screening of this documentary that uses archival video footage filmed by Black and Brown youth from the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s to trace the evolution of HCZ and Harlem across three generations.
