FLOTUS Celebrates College Signing Day in the Zone

On Wednesday, April 26th, HCZ was honored to welcome First Lady Michelle Obama, MTV and Viacom’s Get Schooled initiative, a host of celebrities, and 4,000+ New York City high-school students to our very own Harlem Armory to celebrate National College Signing Day 2016. Part of the First Lady’s Reach Higher initiative and the third annual festivity of its kind, the event was devoted to celebrating students going to college with the same excitement and admiration we typically give to athletes and celebrities.

While over 1,000 Signing Day events were held in nearly all 50 states, the fact that Harlem was selected as the official host site is a testament to the incredible strides made by our kids and community. Thirty, twenty, or even just ten years ago, the thought that Harlem might represent the dream of college for every child would have been inconceivable. But today we are helping to make that dream a reality and we could not be prouder to stand with the First Lady in letting all of our nation’s children know that a college degree is within their reach — if they just reach higher.

Mrs. Obama had a powerful message for the packed room, including hundreds of our own college-bound HCZ high-school students: “The goal is not just getting into college. It’s finishing and getting your degree.” We couldn’t agree more and we are committed to continuing to do whatever it takes to help each and every one of our young scholars reach the ultimate goal — college graduation.
