Being Thankful at HCZ

Earlier this month, HCZ CEO Anne Williams-Isom and a class of Promise Academy I 3rd-graders discussed the importance of thankfulness while reading Nikki Grimes’ Thanks A Million. At the end of the class, the students asked Williams-Isom what she was grateful for that day.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to spend this time with you,” she said with a smile.

In the same way, staff and students at HCZ devoted the entire month of November to expressing gratitude. The theme wasn’t just to celebrate Thanksgiving, but to remind ourselves of the power of thankfulness and how it can be a catalyst to joy.

While elementary students in Promise Academy I and II wrote thank-you letters to their teachers and families, high schoolers practiced mindful gratefulness and journaled what they were thankful for every day.

Children across the Zone devoted time to preparing and serving meals for the hungry.

The high schoolers valued that experience so much that every HCZ high school site made homemade meals and served a Thanksgiving dinner to families in the community.

Expressing gratitude doesn’t just create a happier outlook on life for those receiving the appreciation, but for those who are expressing it as well.

As we take a well-deserved break from work, let’s take a few moments during this Thanksgiving holiday to remind ourselves of the many things we have to be thankful for – including the opportunity to be with each other.
