Student Advocate, HCZ Community Center Satellite Sites

The Lincoln and Salem Centers operate under the umbrella of the HCZ Community Center.  Both centers are housed within two housing project developments, St. Nicholas and Lincoln, and are located in the northern section of the HCZ Project.  These centers offer after-school enrichment programming for the HCZ Promise Academy students, as well as programming and special events for the surrounding community.

We are currently seeking Student Advocates to work closely with our program participants with the goal of positively impacting their social and educational development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of 15 – 25 students
  • Conducts weekly one-on-one meetings with each student
  • Create action plans that are aligned with the academic and social goals set during one-on-one meetings
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with their students schools and parents
  • Works closely with the educational coordinator to assure that their students are supported academically
  • Tracks academic progress of each student and pays special attention to all students on academic alert and in yellow zone
  • Refers students to the Academic Case Management Coordinator and for additional resources and support
  • Hosts their own activities for students and facilitates / co-facilitates workshops / trainings during training weeks, with the full support of their middle or high school coordinator and program coordinator
  • Embodies the principles of youth development
  • Provide a safe environment for youth
  • Maintains open communication with tutors, program aides, and other program staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; matriculating undergraduates are encouraged to apply
  • A commitment to mission and programs of HCZ
  • Must have at least one year of experience working with at-risk youth
  • Must be patient and well organized as well as dedicated to our students’ success
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, solution oriented environment
  • Ability to motivate and maintain the interest of the students while setting an example in all areas, including time and attendance
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
